Story:
As individuals, the Brusly High School wrestling team did well at the Greater Baton Rouge City Championships, with five medalists. However, as a team, the Panthers finished short of the medal stand, placing fifth out of seventeen teams January 29th and January 30th at Catholic High School. The host Bears took the City Championship title easily, with 263 pounds, 35 pounds ahead of the second place team, St. Amant High. Live Oak High finished third with 172 points.
Brusly High did have five individual medalists at City, including one gold medal from junior Austin Franklin. Franklin defeated East Ascension's Landon Wheat by a 7-2 decision to win first place in the 132 pound weight class. With his three victories over the weekend, Franklin upped his record to 37-10.
The Panthers had three silver medalists, with sophomore Hunter Richey, junior Owen Mabile and junior Richard Hunter all placing second in their respective weight classes. Sophomore Brandon Young fought through the consolation bracket and placed third. The Cascio brothers, senior Kyle and freshman Ethan, also finished in the top six, with the elder Cascio placing fourth and the younger placing fifth.
Up next for Brusly High, the junior varsity will participate in the Junior Varsity City Championships at St. Amant High this Saturday and then the Panthers will hit the road for Bossier City and the CenturyLink Center, home of the 2016 Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Championships on February 12th and 13th.
