Brusly wrestling has enjoyed a rich tradition for the last 45 years producing 137 Individual State Champions and 14 Team Titles.
During the 1977-78 School year, Coach Phil Bode started wrestling At Brusly High School by placing some old horsehair mats on the ground between the gym and the small classroom building at the old High School. Coach Bode, born in Iowa, wrestled for Algona High School where he became Iowa's state runner-up at 154 lbs, graduating as Outstanding Wrestler and Team Captain for the Iowa State High School Wrestling Championship team of 1969. Coach Bode then attended Louisiana State University as a scholarship athlete where he was twice Southeastern Conference Champion and twice Runner-up from 1970-1973. He was also captain of his Southeastern Conference Champion team in 1973. He is also responsible for purchasing the schools 1st wrestling mat with his own money. He said "either the B was going to stand for Brusly or it would stand for Bode." Thankfully the B stood for Brusly and Wrestling became one of the most successful sports at Brusly High School.
With Coach Bode's departure in 1982, the program struggled a little and would have fallen out of existence if not for the efforts of Alumni who came back to help keep the program alive. One in particular, Darrell "Whip" Wilson, volunteered his time and efforts to keep the program going. Whip was one of the first State champions of the Wrestling program and one of Coach Bode's Students. His sacrifices of his time and money during this time was very instrumental in keeping the program going.
Coach Mark Moreau came to the program in 1990 and stayed for two years. He was a Graduate and former wrestler at Redemptorist High School. Coach Moreau was the first faculty wrestling coach to be on staff since Coach Bode. This gave the program some much needed stability. He was also instrumental is starting the "Great Eight Tournament" at Brusly which lead to a continuation of the Brusly Invitational started during Coach Bode's tenure.
In 1992, Camille Plaisance became the Wrestling Coach and the program flourished. Along with the help of Whip Wilson and Kirk Mancuso, the program won its first two Division 2 team State Championships in 1995 and 1996. Also, during Coach Plaisance's tenure at Brusly, his 1998 team won the schools 1st Greater Baton Rouge City Championship.
In January of 1999, Coach Jimmy Bible took over the Wrestling Program. Coach Bible is a Brusly Alum and a former wrestler. In the 1999-2000 season, along with the help of Kirk Mancuso and Chip Seymour, the Panther Grapplers were able to bring home its third State Championship Team Title. The Panthers then, with the help of Barrett Wilson, Blake Saucier, and later Justin Montano and Cody Rodriguez, were able to put together a string of 7 State Team Titles starting in 2004 to 2010. In 2011, Coach Bible was able to add Rodney Sutherland to the Wrestling Staff. This proved to be very advantageous for the Panthers, spurring on 3 more State team Titles (2012, 2013, 2014) and a Greater Baton Rouge City Championship in 2014. The Panthers went on to add another State team title in 2015 with the additions of Ryan Luna and Former Brusly standouts Garrett Couvillon and Koby Mancuso to the staff. Herb Juneau was added as a faculty assistant for the 2019-2020 season and Stefan Bergeron was added as a faculty assistant during the 2021-2022 season.
The Brusly Wrestling community is very proud and tight knit. Some say like a Family. We strive to be the best we can be both on and off the mat. Our goal is to teach young men how to become good citizens and productive members of society through Hard work, dedication, and discipline. And along the way they learn how to wrestle.
